Sunny South Bay is known for its picturesque beach cities, thriving startup ecosystem, and being the home of SoCal's aerospace industry. Unfortunately, it's also known for its traffic congestion and transportation challenges.
UrbanTrans, a company that provides transport demand management (TDM) solutions, is prepared to meet these challenges head-on. It's no coincidence that they chose to expand their operations to Los Angeles, a region as famous for its gridlocks as it is for its iconic Hollywood sign.
From the best coworking space South Bay has to offer, UrbanTrans develops policies and programs to give commuters more transportation choices, improve the efficiency of public transport systems, and reduce the demand for travel on roadways to reduce congestion. Apart from being closer to the problems they're aiming to solve, UrbanTrans is also leveraging the region's thriving and diverse talent pool.
Q. In one sentence, describe what your company does.
A. Our firm develops and delivers transportation solutions that are sustainable, innovative, and equitable.
Q. What is the problem you're solving?
A. UrbanTrans addresses two key problems in transportation that affect our communities, including human behavior and choice regarding travel options and the imbalance between the supply and demand of our roadways. Our work results in major air quality, economical, and health benefits for society.
Q. What brought your company to Los Angeles, and what do you like about the startup ecosystem here?
A. LA’s reputation for traffic and its complex history of land use makes our expansion pretty straightforward from a market standpoint. However, there were a couple of other leading factors when choosing which city would be next. One factor was our firm’s President being born and raised in LA, our unrivaled weather, and access to excellent and diverse talent.
Q. How has being a part of the Cross Campus community helped you or your business grow?
A. Cross Campus was exactly what we needed right when we needed it. The pandemic showcased that we needed to innovate our approach to the office. We knew we wanted to ditch our big downtown office but were extremely hesitant we’d lose all the great company culture elements we’d built into it. After doing a comprehensive search, Cross Campus ticked all the boxes for our new normal. We’ve never looked back.
Q. What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
A. Listening to a major LA client present to their board of directors about a transportation service that we designed and delivered for Inglewood residents. Describing its quality and impacts on the community.
Q. How do you and/or your company define success?
A. Each community we work with has specific needs to improve its transportation systems. So success really happens when we partner with the community to overcome barriers and results in measurable positive behavior changes.
Q. If your company was a superhero, who would it be and why?
A. We would be Wonder Woman because we are a badass woman-owned company working to protect and improve the world.
Q. Who do you respect the most, and why?
A. The why becomes obvious with the who. It’s anyone working to achieve better equity in the transportation space.
Q. Where do you see yourself and your business in 10 years?
A. After the past two years with the pandemic, I shy away from forecasting out more than a few months lately. But no doubt working in Cross Campus, of course!
