Member Spotlight: dotstudioPRO

This month’s Member Spotlight highlights Downtown LA member company dotstudioPRO, a digital video power tool that gives today’s entrepreneurs total control over delivering, monetizing, branding, analyzing, and maximizing their content online. The company, which was created for content visionaries, is based in Downtown Los Angeles and Vancouver, Canada and has deployed their technology to help build video brands and networks worldwide.

We spoke with CEO Joe Pascual to bring you the inside scoop on life at dotstudioPRO.

Q: In one sentence, describe who your company is and what you do.

A: dotstudioPRO is a next generation cloud based video distribution and syndication platform-as- a-service.

Q: What is the problem you’re solving?

A: We remove the friction and cost associated with building a video network digitally, like the big boys! dotstudioPRO empowers content owners to build their video content brand without having to think about the technology and resources it takes to build and maintain it. Enabling them to reach their audience and grow their empire.

dotstudioPRO’s clients have the ability to manage, distribute, syndicate and monetize video across owned-and- operated, branded environments on various platforms such as Roku, ChromeCast, Apple TV, Facebook, Mobile and Multiple (affiliate based) Micro-sites. Content owners can choose a combination of AVOD and VOD/SVOD to monetize their content. Our motto is “We bring the platform. You bring the brilliance.”

Q: What brought your company to Los Angeles, and what do you like about the startup ecosystem here?

A: Entertainment was the driving force that brought us all to Los Angeles throughout all of our careers. The things that drew us here with our startup was that there is an exploding entertainment technology community showing up to support the digital transition our industry is facing. We don’t have to explain to anyone what a vibrant and exhilarating ecosystem for innovation there is in Los Angeles, and Southern California. Hollywood has always been the home for entertainment, from the invention of the movies to the evolution of the film, to today’s evolution in distribution. We couldn’t imagine a more ideal home, and community, for our company to be a part of.

It was through the support of some representatives in the Canadian government that we were able to make the transition that has brought us here today. They first worked to place us in an accelerator program called EvoNexus in San Diego, designed to provide intimate access to some of to top industry veterans, who would provide mentorship as well as open doors to synergistic opportunities. It was through this experience that we made the move with some of our team, to Downtown LA.Q: How has being a part of the Cross Campus community helped you or your business grow?A: When we graduated from EvoNexus at the end of April we knew that making the move to LA was going to be the next step in our evolution. Therefore, we knew finding a great office space that represented our company culture, fit our lifestyles and provided a solid path to business development, which would equal growth on every level, was essential to find success. Cross Campus has exceeded our company’s checklist of must haves in order for us to achieve this.Being centrally located on a commuter line in the financial district of DTLA has spring boarded our presence in LA and opened a clear path to fundraising and client acquisition. We have grown our company’s team, adding 4 to make 16, closed our next round of funding successfully and have the ability to keep on boarding enterprise clientele.

You know the phrase, ‘it’s all about who you know’? Well this statement couldn’t be a truer statement for Cross Campus. To be a member of this collective of like-minded, ambitious, intuitive and inventive professionals is inspiring us to new heights.

Q: What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

A: When you invent something out of thin air, you are taking a true leap of faith that anyone will find your invention useful. So coming out of Beta this year on June 15th , 2016 “ByeByeBeta” has to be it! While we have had many satisfying moments in business, this one has been special.It made up for all those times when we just wanted to give up and asked ourselves is this really worth it? In this moment, we dug our heels in a little more, and mustered through it, finding success. It was an amazing feeling, as Founders, to know that your invention is empowering your peers to reach new heights in their journeys. Watching them as they build their monetizable digital video business. For the first-time is our industry our clients can see real tangible success from the distribution and syndication of their video content, one first view delivered to their customer, from their dotstudioPRO dashboards. It’s like every time a one of our content network partner distributes and or syndicates, a little start-up angel gets its wings. It makes us kind of giddy.Q: Tell me about a time you failed at a goal you needed to achieveA: Along the same lines as above, we took a leap of faith that our product would be welcomed on the market. We failed a lot at the very beginning, all the while watching our competitors secure funding easily garnering huge valuations, leapfrogging ahead of us. It was frustrating, but ultimately the best challenge, because it forced us to find strong pivots, listen to the market an access our vision constantly. This led us run small video monetization tests against targeted niche audiences with our clients, during our beta.The numbers never lie, much like the yellow brick road, our video analytics reveal a golden path to what we should focus on so we could expand from there. The biggest thing we have learnt is that every business encounters failure, but it’s that very failure that provides the chance to grow, should we take on the challenge! To deny the challenge is what makes the difference between our successes and failures. #JustDOiT  Q: What are some of the characteristics of people that have been successful at your company? A: We have three very different executives, who each approach a challenge from a different perspective, but we share common goals. Despite our differences, the characteristics that have kept us all working together over these years – with many ups and downs – is determination, intuition and practicality.Our schedules are slammed from morning until night; we work with teammates who are in different time zones, and some who are only available for short periods of time during non-work hours. So collectively, our characteristics complement our company team, culture and product.

Q: If your company were a Hogwarts house, which one would it be? Why?

A: Great question. Our CEO is a big Harry Potter fan, someone who has read all of the books, before seeing the movies. Therefore, we see ourselves being sorted into Gryffindor hands down; they are the underdogs for sure. Don’t rule us out, we are going to fly circles around you. That is us.

Q: Who do you respect the most, and why?

A: We really cannot help thinking of Muhammad Ali, when we considering this question. He was a man who evolved over his life – and in the prime of it reacted with real heart, real soul and real emotion to the world around him. He was not without his detractors, some justifiably so, but he was good hearted to core. And he left us all with a legacy that we’ll pass on from our kids to their kids and so on. We’re so pleased to have lived in the time of Ali. He was a real champion. Always was, always will be.

Q: Where do you see yourself and your business in 10 years?

A: We will evolve with the technology as viewership evolves and their data paints the picture. The technology that dotstudioPRO has at its core is disruptive, versatile and adaptable, which means that we will continue to iterate and be disruptive in the video distribution and syndication space.
