Based on McGhee's extraordinarily powerful book, this talk explores how racism divides and devastates us; but it also offers a path forward.

About this event

Join the Esler Family Foundation and partners as we welcome New York Times bestselling author of The Sum of Us and renowned expert on the American economy, Heather McGhee, for a talk about the devastating true cost of racism—not just for people of color, but for everyone. Deeply stirring, intelligent, and compassionate, McGhee’s talks offer us an actionable roadmap during one of the most critical—and most troubled—periods in history.

Following her talk, we will hold a moderated Q+A to talk with Heather about how we might take action in the context of Worcester and other Massachusetts Gateway Cities surrounding issues of educational equity and other disparities in our communities.

This event will be moderated by Dr. Mariel Novas. As Director of Partnerships & Engagement for Massachusetts at The Education Trust, Mariel convened the Massachusetts Education Equity Partnership, a statewide coalition of civil rights, social justice, and education advocates working together to advance educational and racial equity in historically underserved communities across the state. Prior to joining The Education Trust, Mariel launched the Homegrown Program at Teach For America-Massachusetts, was a community organizer and co-founder of the Boston Education Action Network, and a middle school math teacher in Dorchester to newcomers from Latin America, in the same school district and neighborhood where she was once a student. Mariel holds a doctorate in Education Leadership (Ed.L.D) from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
